The Multiplanetary Society is dedicated to making humanity Multiplanetary by 2035. MPS is inspired by the vision of spacers such as Gerard K. O’Neill, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos. When we look at the counterbalance the general public often brings up in opposition to investing money, time, and other resources into space, we see systemic issues such as ethnic/national conflict, ecological distress, resource scarcity, war, famine, etc. All of these are the result of one relationship: that of an ever-expanding species (Humanity) dwelling within a closed system (Earth). MPS is strongly pro-human, and we recognize the unique value of Earth as a place of abundant biodiversity that can support not only life but intelligent life. The path FORWARD is one where both of these systems flourish. Humanity must expand in order to evolve, and the Earth can only support so many life forms. The answer is to get humanity out there, up there, into the cosmos. We must spread into many systems, including moons, planets, asteroids, space stations, and generational ships. We are at a point now in our evolution where we have the ability to reach the next great frontier, but that ability is always at risk of falling away. We do not have the luxury of getting to this later. Either humanity evolves and migrates, explores and settles out there in space, or we stagnate and fail. Our organization is dedicated to audacity in our timeline because we believe several opportunities to settle space have come and gone due to distractions and faulty terrestrial systems more focused on jobs programs than shepherding the human species into the next era of expansion. We have two entry points allowing people to interact with MPS. The first is membership, which entails paying a monthly fee and taking on at least one mission a month. The second is sponsorship, which allows people to support our work by simply writing a check. We prefer members to sponsors, but both help get the work done. Members are more like crew members than fans and are asked to lend their skills and bandwidth to the organization so that we can achieve our goal of making humanity Multiplanetary. Sponsors are putting fuel in the tank and stepping back to see where we go with it. By joining MPS, you are making a commitment to prioritize our future in space. Members are asked to complete missions in their local areas and to build support for this movement. Unlike many traditional membership organizations, we are not content to simply take your monthly fee and send you a T-shirt and a newsletter. Instead, we are asking you to join the crew and contribute in some meaningful way to achieve the objective of ensuring humanity strives for the greatest adventure we have ever encountered. These volunteers are advocates and mentors who are paired with Foster Kids. We aim to partner in this work by encouraging spacers to become CASAs and help Foster Kids find pathways into the Space Industry. Every year, hundreds of thousands of kids are in Foster Care. What would our world look like if these children were empowered to take our species to the stars? By enlisting amazing people within our industry to mentor these children, we are building our future in space, one child at a time. Save-A-Seat As a community, we have a regular menu of space events throughout the year. With our Save-A-Seat initiative, we ask organizations, companies, and event organizers to save the front row for Foster Kids, giving them opportunities to speak at such events and meet influential members of the industry. Camp Foster Along with sending cohorts of Foster Kids to Space Camp, Camp Foster seeks to build educational summer pop-ups for them, including maker spaces, astronomy nights, on-site field trips, and more. In addition to these initiatives, we are asking the industry to help us build scholarships to empower this overlooked community. Annually, we will host seasonal challenges, beginning with the Space Angel challenge of 2024. For this challenge, we are asking all spacers to partner with Angel Tree to supply foster kids with holiday gifts. These gifts should be STEM- and Space-focused, including vouchers for opportunities such as Space Camp.
